Evolution and Clinical Relevance of a Dedicated Head Holder & Coil Solution for Intraoperative MRI-guided Neurosurgery
Enabling intraoperative MRI means enabling higher precision for brain tumor resections ðŸ§
A successful brain tumor resection takes two essentials: A highly-skilled team - and specialized state-of-the-art technology to match it.
That's why on this World Brain Tumor Day, we are honrored to share a clinical evaluation of our LUCY OR Head Holder & 8-Ch Coil , published in MAGNETOM Flash (Siemens Healthineers), conducted at RKH Klinikum Ludwigsburg by neurosurgeon Dr. Dirk Freudenstein and his team.
By providing real-time anatomical information during surgery, ioMRI supports the assessment of resection progress and helps surgeons make informed decisions while the patient is still in the operating room. This way, it improves surgical precision and contributes to better patient outcomes.
The study demonstrates the value of a dedicated coil-integrated head fixation system as it enables high-quality intraoperative imaging without compromising surgical workflow. Over a three-month period, the LUCY OR system was evaluated across 20 microsurgical procedures, including 16 glioblastoma resections with 4 awake craniotomies, under varying head positions and angulations.
Key clinical findings:
✔ Safe and stable three-pin fixation across all head positions and patient anatomies
✔ Full range of motion: height adjustability, rotation, tilt, swivel, z-axis, and lateral displacement
✔ Intraoperative draping and coil placement completed in under 10 minutes
✔ Consistently high intraoperative MR image quality throughout all procedures
These results confirm the clinical value of purpose-built, coil-integrated head fixation systems in maximizing surgical safety, imaging performance and workflow reproducibility during ioMRI-guided neurosurgery.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Dirk Freudenstein and the entire neurosurgery team at RKH Gesundheit as well as to Antje Hellwich and her team for their invaluable collaboration, clinical expertise, and commitment to advancing intraoperative MRI.
We are proud and thankful to contribute to the advancement of modern image-guided neurosurgery with you!
